Earlier this year, Amazon launched a new program for its Prime members called “Prime Pantry.” The service is like a custom kitting process. Customers are allowed to order as many grocery items that will fit in a 4-cubic-foot box that holds up to 45 lbs. As customers add items to their cart, they are told what percentage of the box is filled. When the order is complete, the box ships for a flat rate of $5.99 (regardless of how full it is). Amazon.com filed a patent late last year for a “Method and system for anticipatory package shipping.” In short, the company plans to develop a system that ships items to customers before they have actually ordered them. By now, you’ve probably heard about Amazon’s theoretical drone delivery system – Prime Air. A few months ago, Google launched beta testing for an ecommerce service called Google Shopping Express available in the San Francisco Bay area. During the test, selected users can shop online for products from local stores (all under the same interface) which are then delivered that same day.
